Convert minutes to decimal hours

A minutes to decimal calculator turns a plain number of minutes — or hours and minutes together — into the decimal hours figure that payroll systems and spreadsheets expect. Type a value on the left and the decimal hours result updates immediately, with no button to click.

The formula: decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60). Divide by 60, never by 100, since an hour has 60 minutes, not 100 — that single mix-up is the most common source of payroll errors when converting by hand.

Worked examples

  • 20 minutes → 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33 decimal hours
  • 55 minutes → 55 ÷ 60 = 0.92 decimal hours
  • 1 hour 30 minutes → 1 + (30 ÷ 60) = 1.50 decimal hours
  • 8 hours 45 minutes → 8 + (45 ÷ 60) = 8.75 decimal hours

Converting decimal hours back to minutes

Switch the calculator to "Decimal → Minutes" to go the other way. The formula simply reverses: minutes = decimal fraction × 60. For example, 0.33 decimal hours has a fractional part of 0.33; 0.33 × 60 = 19.8, which rounds to 20 minutes — matching the first example above.

Why payroll uses decimal hours

"7 hours 30 minutes" is easy for a person to read, but awkward for a spreadsheet to multiply against an hourly rate, since 30 minutes isn't 30% of an hour — it's 50%. Decimal hours solve that: 7.5 hours × a rate is a single, ordinary multiplication, which is why most payroll systems and timesheets ask for hours in decimal form.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 100 instead of 60. "45 minutes = 0.45 hours" is a common but incorrect shortcut; the correct figure is 0.75.
  • Reading .30 as "30 minutes." A decimal of 0.30 is 18 minutes (0.30 × 60), not 30 — the digits look similar but mean different things.
  • Rounding too early when adding several values. Add in minutes (or keep full decimal precision) and convert once at the end, rather than rounding each entry first.
