An hours calculator finds the time between a start time and an end time, then subtracts a break if you had one. This free hours calculator does that instantly: enter a start time, an end time, and an optional break in minutes, and it returns the elapsed time, the break, and the net working time.
Example: Start at 9:00 AM, end at 5:00 PM, with a 30-minute break. That is 8 hours elapsed, minus 30 minutes, for 7 hours 30 minutes of net working time. The result also shows as a decimal — 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 — which is handy for payroll or invoicing in decimal hours.
This hours between two times calculator also works when a shift crosses midnight. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the next day. A shift from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM comes back as 8 hours, not a negative number, so this time duration calculator works the same for night shifts as it does for a normal daytime shift.
| Shift | Hours |
|---|---|
| 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM | 8h 00m |
| 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM | 8h 30m |
| 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 30-min lunch | 7h 30m |
| 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM | 8h 00m |
This hours and minutes calculator is meant for a single stretch of time. For a full week, try the Weekly Time Calculator or Time Card Calculator; for more than one work period in a day, try the Work Hours Calculator.
